History

The Chair has been established to promote the development of political science in RA, as well as education and training of the staff in the spheres of public administration and local self-government. Then the block was named “Political Bases of Public Administration and Self-Government”.

2002, when the School of Administration was renamed into Public Administration Academy of RA, the Chair of Political Science (Political Processes and Institutions) was founded.

In 2006 it was reorganized into the Chair of Political Science (Political Governance and Political Analysis) bearing in view that the departments of public administration and local self-government require competitive specialists in political governance and political analysis. From the very beginning the Chair has been carrying out various international and in-state programs in cooperation with the similar institutions of Canada, Ireland, and England.

Since 1997 the Chair is headed by Doctor of Political Science, Professor Mariam Margaryan. Mariam Margaryan defended doctoral thesis in 2006 in “Political Elite in the Republic of Armenia in terms of democratic transmission”. In 2011 M. Margaryan was awarded with the title of Professor of Political Science by Higher Qualification Committee. She is Vice-President of the 056 professional council of “Political Sciences and International Relations” of HQC which operates in the Institute for National Strategic Studies, MOD RA. In 2014 she was awarded with Movses Khorenatsi Medal by the President of RA.

The main purpose of the Chair is to educate a qualified staff for the sphere of public and political governance and local self-government through sustainable education and modernization. To synthesize theoretical and practical knowledge, the Chair permanently holds round table conferences, seminars, thematic discussions which are dedicated to the issues of political modernization and development in RA.

Education

Under the established order of the Legislation of RA and PAARA Charter, the Chair of Political Governance and Public Policy at Public Administration Academy of RA, practices:

  1. Professional Master’s program through higher professional educational The graduates are awarded with the qualification of Master of political science in specialization of Political Science.

The Chair runs three programs. They are “Political Governance and Political Analysis”, “Global Governance and Regional Policy” and “Political Journalism and PR Technologies”.

The educational program “Political Governance and Political Analysis” includes the international experience for development of political science in the field of effectiveness of state, political and public governance allowing the young people to:

The educational program “Global Governance and Regional Policy” coordinates modern tendencies of development of political science. Its aim is to discover the value system of local (national), regional and global policy. It will allow the young people to:

The main aim of the educational program “Political Journalism and PR Technologies” is to educate journalists and PR specialists, who will be able to analyze political processes, unveil the political nature of actual challenges, and contribute to the formation of real and comprehensive social opinion. It will make the social opinion normally modernized by implementation of competitive political journalism and political PR technologies within the net of information and communication. It will promote the public coexistence and humanization.

The educational program seeks for providing professional education in the sphere of theory of political journalism and PR technologies with effective implementation of innovative knowledge. It will allow to disclose the practicing game mechanisms within the standards of affirmation, maintenance and transmission of authority in the modern political processes, as well as to interpret the positive and negative development tendencies in political communication and PR technologies.

It will allow the Master students to:

  1. Post-graduate professional education, which is drafted in the format of post-graduate studies, research and doctoral studies for the specialty of “Political institutions and processes” (index ԻԳ. 0.02),
  2. Courses for quality improvement and training of the specialists of supplementary educational programs.

Scientific-Research Activities

The professors of the Chair of Political Governance and Public Policy, as well as the Master students, post-graduate students and researchers periodically publish scientific articles, educational and methodic materials which are dedicated to the urgent problems of political science in the terms of formation of information society. Thematic conformity allows to view thoroughly the civilizational, socio-psychological, political and economic peculiarities and nature of political processes in national-regional-global (past-present-future) three dimension space.

PAARA Master students headed directly by the Chair have participated in republican and international conferences and have been awarded with diplomas and prizes.

Cooperation

The Chair of Political Governance and Public Policy cooperates with the Chair of Political Institutions and Processes, and the Chair of History and Theory of Political Science at Yerevan State University, the Chair of History of Political Science and Law at State Pedagogical University after Kh. Abovyan, and Russian-Armenian University. Within the framework of Erasmus+ program the Chair cooperates with Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, Austria, by exchange order. In the result of this cooperation annually two students are offered to continue their education at the department of Political science at Salzburg University for five months period.

The Chair carries out lectures and intensive practical lessons monthly with participation of politicians of RA, journalists, diplomats and representatives of business elite.
